The Vineyard Mil Vistas Vineyard ~ Sebastopol, California
At 470 feet above sea level, this vineyard rests on steep western and eastern slopes that reach gradients of 30%, carved into the coastal hills just ten miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The land is held by goldridge soils which are sandy, well-drained, and perfectly suited to the measured stress that produces concentrated, balanced fruit. The surrounding landscape of apple orchards and redwood forest not only frames the vineyard with beauty, but also contributes to a diverse ecosystem that supports regenerative farming practices.
The vineyard carries two eras of vines: old plantings from 1992 with deep, established roots that provide natural balance and low yields of clonal selections 115, Pommard and DRC. The Mt. Eden clone, planted in 2017, brings youthful vigor and intensity. Together, they form a mosaic; each block responding differently to the cool coastal mornings and sunlit afternoons that define this site.
The vineyard is organically and regeneratively farmed, with cover crops of clover, legumes, and native grasses building nitrogen and organic matter into the soil, and compost returning nutrients to the land. No synthetic herbicides or pesticides are used. Irrigation is applied sparingly, only when vine signals a need. Every pass through the vineyard is done with the intention of letting the site’s character come through in the fruit.
This is farming that relies on observation as much as data. Walking the rows, watching the fog burn back, feeling the soil beneath your boots. It's a balance of science and intuition that allows the vineyard to tell its own story in every harvest.
“I saw redwood trees, the soil, the ocean air... I knew this vineyard was waiting to tell its story.”
